The Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF), in collaboration with the UN Global Compact, International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Labour Organization (ILO), and with support from Lloyd’s Register Foundation, has launched the first interim training frameworks for seafarers on ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen-fuelled vessels.

Developed with the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub (technical lead) and the World Maritime University (academic lead), these frameworks provide a global reference point for harmonised training standards to help the maritime workforce safely adapt to zero- and near-zero emission fuels.

What the Frameworks Cover

The frameworks are available at both basic and advanced levels, supported by comprehensive instructor handbooks to help maritime education and training (MET) institutions build effective programmes.

They are designed to:

  • Equip entry-level and senior seafarers with knowledge and competencies to work safely with alternative fuels
  • Provide practical, simulation-based, and classroom guidance, including fire safety, bunkering, fuel system operations, pollution prevention, and emergency response
  • Ensure consistency with the STCW Convention and input into the IMO’s ongoing review of global training standards
  • Support regulators, maritime academies, and shipping companies to update certification schemes, curricula, and safety management systems.

Why This Matters

The maritime industry faces an urgent need to upskill its workforce for new fuels central to decarbonisation. Unlike LNG, ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen currently lack globally recognised training guidelines. These frameworks close that gap by:

  • Enhancing safety for seafarers handling new fuels.

  • Supporting equity and inclusion, ensuring workers’ voices are embedded in the transition.

  • Accelerating fuel adoption by giving companies and regulators confidence in harmonised training pathways.
