Accelerating the decarbonisation of shipping

This is the Hub's strategic roadmap for driving a safe, sustainable, and equitable transition in the maritime industry. It sets out how the Hub tackles systemic barriers, such as safety risks, policy gaps, and financing challenges, through targeted research, cross-sector coalitions, and scalable solutions to ensure that maritime decarbonisation delivers tangible benefits for seafarers, communities, and the planet.

The Hub's inaugural Impact Report highlights the measurable outcomes of our flagship programmes and collaborative initiatives, demonstrating how our work is advancing a safer, more sustainable, and equitable maritime sector. The report captures the real-world impact of our efforts to address systemic barriers, such as safety, finance, and policy alignment, while outlining our forward-looking strategies to scale our influence, strengthen stakeholder partnerships, and further our social purpose.

Th Hub partnered with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) to publish a series of reports providing a strategic roadmap to prepare seafarers for the safe and effective operation of ammonia-fuelled ships. These reports address key safety considerations, training needs, human factors integration, and regulatory pathways, offering practical guidance to support a just and human-centred transition to alternative fuels in shipping.

As a Selection Committee member of the Catalytic Finance Foundation’s Port Decarbonisation Blended Finance Facility, the Hub contributes a systems-thinking, evidence-led perspective to the evaluation of investment-ready proposals aimed at accelerating the decarbonisation of ports and the wider maritime ecosystem.

This report, produced by the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF) in collaboration with the Decarb Hub and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), explores the critical training considerations for seafarers operating ships powered by ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen. It highlights the evolving skills, safety protocols, and regulatory frameworks needed to ensure a just transition, placing seafarer well-being and competency at the centre of maritime decarbonisation efforts.

A Green Corridor Cluster and first-mover initiative on zero-emissions shipping, with a fleet that operates across the Indian and Pacific Oceans and fosters partnerships with stakeholders across the maritime supply chain. By aligning stakeholders across the entire maritime value chain, the initiative aims to de-risk investment, enable fuel adoption, and create a scalable pathway for the transition.

An initiative which aims to unlock the potential for clean and sustainable maritime fuels through dialogue and collaboration amongst energy and transport ministries across Asia Pacific and Africa. Through regional cooperation and knowledge exchange, the initiative supports a just and inclusive transition towards a decarbonised maritime sector in emerging and developing economies.
